Under the Red Globe

The clock tower and globe were built in 1910 as an important part of Dimmeys advertising.

The globe originally consisted of ruby-coloured glass. It was lit internally, making an impressive beacon that could be seen for miles around.

On Friday and Saturday evenings , shoppers were entertained by musicians who played from bandstand balconies on the upper level of the tower.

The red globe was replaced with copper in 1939.
